Silk for spring

15 Mar

This outfit came together kind of surprisingly.  I found this really great skirt at Natalie Dressed consignment last year, originally from Anthropologie, that seemed to have everything going for it: beautiful silk material, neat shape, and a great printed design of birds and flowers.  Yet every time I tried to pair it with one of my shirts it just didn’t quite work.  Then, yesterday night while I was looking through my closet for something appropriate to wear in 80+ degree weather, I pulled out a dark red shirt and realized I’d never tried dark colors with the skirt.  So, here it is.

Le Renard

23 Feb

Today was a big day for me: work, and an interview for a very creative teaching position.  It was also very warm– 60 degrees for most of the day.  The challenge, then, was to put together a fairly lightweight outfit that combined business-casual with a little bit of a creative twist.

Plaid and Suede

15 Feb

It seems only appropriate to follow up the post on vintage shoe thrifting with a success story of my own.  All the shoes in that post were (sadly) the wrong size for me.  Ladies in the past seem to have had much daintier feet (and hands!) than myself, and sizes also run a bit small.  However, last week I hit the jackpot!

Birthday Post!

19 Jan

What better time to feature a great vintage piece.  This one was a real find for me!  It’s a polyester shirt from the 70’s, and it actually has long enough arms for me (always a surprise), but more importantly, it has an amazing Peter Pan Collar:

Fall foliage

3 Nov

Today I had lunch with an awesome potential student, and two of my delightful colleagues.  I decided to wear a skirt, because the weather was predicted (accurately!) to get up to 65, making it one of my last few chances this season to go bare-legged.  I think this post barely qualifies as a “thrift store” post, because most of it is from my pre-thrifting days, but it was a fun outfit, so here it is anyway!

Orange Corduroy

13 Oct

In light of my thorough soaking yesterday, I played it a little smarter today and pulled out my rainboots.  It wasn’t actually pouring, though, so a light blazer sufficed to keep out the cool and damp, in one of my favorite colors, orange, and one of my favorite fabrics, corduroy!

Storm and Calm

2 Sep

Last night there was violent wind, rain and lightning for hours, enough to wake me from a sound sleep.  This morning, the sky was overcast and the weather was beautiful.  Since I was feeling a little subdued I decided on a pretty reserved outfit; originally I was wearing this with a jacket, but the humidity was just a bit too high so I’ll feature the jacket in a later post.  The setting is a poorly kept up stadium area, one of the few really run down places on campus, which just makes it more interesting.

September begins

1 Sep

It feels like summer is really gone now, with the semester well underway.  Time to buckle down and get my work done, bring a bag large enough to contain a lunch and a thermos of coffee, and wear some white pants before Labor day hits.

The Vintage Tee: A fashion comparison

29 Aug

Today I pulled out one of my favorite t-shirts.  I have a decent amount of t-shirts, usually reserved for wear under blazers or with skirts on warm fall days, but I almost never wear this one because it’s become quite fragile over the years.  It’s an original Raiders of the Lost Ark t-shirt from c. 1981, and I’ve never been able to find another like it.

First day of a new semester

22 Aug

Today was our first graduate meeting of the semester, time to meet new students, hear about what the department’s been up to, and have some delicious sandwiches.  I figured something professional but not too serious wouldn’t be amiss.
